As with all other classes, each student processed and printed his own exposed aerial films. In the fourth month, the student also learned the techniques of creating Mosaic Maps using prints made from high altitude Reconnaissance Mapping Photographs.
Upon graduating from the Naval School of Photography, the Marines from VMD-354 were returned to MCAS Cherry Point, NC to rejoin their squadron.
POLAROID-VECTOGRAPH
Some photographic personnel were sent to the Polaroid Vectograph Company located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to learn the techniques of producing three dimensional prints using special photographic materials. Two photographs are taken of the same subject with a slight displacement of the camera or camera lens, to simulate the spacing of the human eyes.
A print of the subject from each exposure is made on special polarizing material and then these prints are mounted on opposite sides of a sheet of translucent base material with a slight left to right displacement. The back surface of the composite print is covered with a reflective coating. The finished plate/print is viewed using a pair of Polaroid glasses and the result is seen in three dimensions. The resuling three dimensional print gives depth to the target area providing the Photo-interpreter with greater accuracy in evaluating the target or target area.
