The US Marine Corps installation on Guam, MAG-21, 4th MAW, FMF, encompassed a tremendously large area in the Agana region of Guam. It was the overseas home and base of operations to many Marine Corps Air Squadrons that made up Marine Air Group 21.
MAG-21 headquarters provided the living quarters and all the essentials necesary to maintain an acceptable way of living. The complex provided living quarters for both the officers (BOQ) and the enlisted personnel. The living quarters, as well as most buildings, were the Quonset type of structures. The area contained Mess Halls for both the officers and the enlisted personnel, Laundry Facilities, a Post Exchange, Sick Bay, Outdoor Theater, Chapel, Clubs and/or Recreational Facilities, and a Library.
There were classrooms and instructors for the furthering of ones personal education and class instruction for the improvement and the advancemnent of personnel with their military skills. Guam also had its own radio station, WXLI, which was operated by military personnel.
The first of the VMD-354 personnel to arrive at Guam, were the men of the forward echelon. On 25 May 1945, the members of the forward echelon, disembarked at Apra Harbor, Guam and joined up with MAG-21, 4th MAW, FMF. They then settled into the living quarters assigned to them by MAG-21.
The men of the forward echelon then began the task of establishing the area for the base headquarters of VMD-354. The area designated by MAG-21 was a section of undeveloped jungle adjacent to the Agana Airfield and along side one of the airfield taxi runways. The men cleared the area and erected the tent like structures that would become the VMD-354 base of operations. The area included the Headquarters Building, Sick Bay, Post Office, Paint Shop, etc. There were revetments for the F6F Hellcats and an area to maintain and service the aircraft. The VMD-354 base of operations was nearly ready for the arrival of the rear echelon of the squadron.
On 13 June 1945, the rear echelon of 33 officers and 277 enlisted personnel arrived at Apra Harbor, Guam, disembarked and went to the MAG-21 living quarters designated for them along side of those of the men of the forward echelon.
