The squadron published its own newspaper, the VMD's Sports Bulletin. The Post Newspaper carried the stories of the basketball games, post happenings and coming events. It also carried other stories of interest to squadron members. In December, the post newspaper ran a contest to select a squadron PIN UP girl. Personnel were requested to submit entries for their choice for best Pin Up. The winner of the contest was an attractive 18 year old, Mrs. Irene Schneider, sister of Sgt. Charles Phillips of VMD-354.

For pleasure and relaxation. the squadron personnel would go into Greenville on liberty. Greenville was an ideal liberty town. The City of Greenville was the home of the East Carolina Teachers College. The enrollment at the college, ECTC, was almost 100% young women. The City of Greenville also had a USO which was sponsored by the Greenville Women's Club. Under the guidance of Mrs. Savage, the Women's Club members provided the squadron personnel who visited the USO while on liberty, with food and entertainment. The Women's Club members also prepared full Turkey Dinners for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day for squadron members, guests and other visiting military personnel who happened to stop by the USO.

On Sunday evenings at the USO, the Women's Club sponsored a live radio broadcast for the entertainment and pleasure of the military personnel who were visiting the USO and for the listening radio audiences. In addition to being entertained, attending personnel and guests were encouraged to display their individual talents and to try their luck at being a Master of Ceremonies of the broadcast.

The squadron's period of training at Greenville was very brief, less than 6 months, but, in that brief period of time, there were a number of meaningful relationships that had developed between some of the squadron personnel and the young women of Greenville which eventually culminated in marriage.

On 12 April 1945, Lt.Col. J.W. Burkhardt, USMC, was detached to MAG-53 and Major Douglas B. Lenardson, USMCR, took command of the squadron. Major Paul T. Martin, USMCR, was assigned as the squadron Executive Officer. Captain Louis J. Conti, USMCR, became the squadron Operations Officer.

On 6 April 1945, secret orders were received directing VMD-354 to proceed to the West Coast for further assignment for overseas duty.

VMD-954, under the command of Major V.C. Ullman, was ordered to remain at the Outling Field in Greenville,NC, and to continue with the squadrons training while awaiting orders for their overseas assignment.

All VMD-354 training operations ceased and preparations were begun immediately for the transporting of the squadron to the West Coast.
