padUS Marine Corps Outlying Field, Greenville, NC

On 1 November 1944, The squadron was transferred from Cherry Point, NC to the US Marine Corps Outlying Field, Greenville, NC. Greenville, a small city, is located approximately 70 miles Northwest of Cherry Point, NC. The airfield was on the outskirts of the city. Greenville was the home of the East Carolina Teachers College, now known as East Carolina University.

Prior to the transfer of the squadron to Greenville, the airfield had previously been the training base for a number of other Marine Corps Air Squadrons. VMSB-343 and VMSB-344, had trained at Greenville from December 1943 to 15 July 1944. On July 15 1944, VMF-913 and VMF-914 were commissioned at the Greenville, NC Outlying Field. Both squadrons were later transferred to MCAS, Cherry Point, NC on 16 October 1944.

The living quarters at the Greenville base were made up of Dallas Huts. These huts were square structures with walls made of a single thickness of thin plywood. There were rectangular openings cut into the walls and covered with a translucent material and these served as windows. A section of plywood hinged above the opening, acted as an awning to the window and could be lowered to cover the opening at nighttime and during inclement weather. Three single huts were joined together to form one large hut. The commom walls between the single huts were removed to make one large single unit. The triple Dallas Huts had two access doors. These Huts had no insulation and the Winter of 1944 and 1945 was cold making the living conditions in the Dallas Huts very uncomfortable. Each triple Dallas Hut had two coal fired stoves for heat, there was a stove located in each end unit of the triple unit.

The Latrines were large Quonset Huts. The Quonset Hut is made of corrigated sheet metal and was very sturdy. The base also had it's own Post Exchange, Chapel and Sick Bay. Some of the larger buildings, such as the Mess Hall and Kitchen, were wooden structures. Most all of the other work buildings were made up of multiple Dallas Hut Units.

The squadron quickly settled in at the Greenville Airfield and continued training with the F6F Hellcats. With VMD-354 and VMD-954 being the only two squadrons stationed at Greenville, the training progressed rapidly. On 14 November 1944, an additional 8 pilots were transferred from VMD-354 into VMD-954.

Squadron personnel organized their own basketball, volleyball and baseball teams. The basketball team became the most active and best organized. They played competitively against basketball teams from civilian groups and other military bases. Some of their opponents included AWG-1, Chapel Hill Pre-flight Cadets, New River, VMF-914 and Atlantic Field, to name a few.
